Is Your Pool Leaking? Here's How to Tell

You've noticed the water level dropping, right? Maybe more than usual. So, is it just evaporation, or do you have a leak? That's the first thing we need to figure out, and honestly, it's usually pretty straightforward.

First off, evaporation is a real thing, especially here in Chattanooga with our hot, humid summers and those occasional dry spells. A pool can easily lose a quarter-inch to half-inch of water a day. Sometimes it's even more if it's super hot and windy out. If you're losing more than that, or if you're constantly adding water, chances are you've got a leak.

The easiest way to check? We call it the 'bucket test.' Grab a five-gallon bucket and fill it with pool water. Set it on your first or second step so the water level inside the bucket is the same as the water level in your pool. Mark the water level inside the bucket with a permanent marker. Then, mark the water level of the pool on the outside of the bucket. Turn off your pump and any auto-fill systems, okay? Wait 24 hours. If the pool water level outside the bucket drops more than the water level inside the bucket, you've definitely got a leak. If they drop about the same amount, it's probably just evaporation.

Another common sign? Wet spots around the pool deck or yard that just won't dry up, even on a sunny day. Or maybe your water bill suddenly shot up, which is never fun. If you're seeing any of these, it's time to investigate.

Your DIY Leak Detection Checklist

Before you call someone like Alpha Pools Chattanooga, there are a few things you can check yourself. You might save yourself a service call, or at least help us narrow down the problem quickly.

  • Check your equipment pad: Look for any drips or puddles around your pump, filter, heater, or valves. Sometimes it's just a loose union or a worn-out O-ring. You can often tighten or replace those pretty easily.
  • Inspect your skimmer and return lines: Look for cracks in the plastic skimmer housing itself. Check around the faceplate where it meets the pool wall. For returns, feel around the jets for any water seeping out.
  • Dive in (if you can): Put on a mask and goggles and swim around your pool. Look closely at the main drain, the light fixture, and especially any cracks in the plaster or liner. If you have a vinyl liner, pay close attention to any tears or holes, particularly around fittings or where the liner meets the coping. Sometimes a small tear is visible if you just look closely enough.
  • Use a dye test: This is a neat trick, actually. With your pump off and the water still, take a small bottle of pool dye (or even some dark food coloring) and squirt a tiny bit near suspected leak areas – cracks, fittings, the light niche. If there's a leak, the dye will get sucked right into the crack or hole.

Remember, a lot of leaks are small and can be tricky to spot. Don't get discouraged if you don't find it right away.

When It's Time to Call the Pros

So, you've done your homework. You've checked everything you can, maybe even tried the dye test, and you still can't find the source. Or maybe the leak is just too big for a simple DIY fix. That's when you need to call in a professional leak detection service. Here's why:

  • Specialized equipment: We've got gear you probably don't have lying around. Think hydrophones that listen for leaks underground, pressure testing equipment for plumbing lines, and even cameras that can go into pipes.
  • Experience: We've seen it all. From tiny pinholes in vinyl liners to cracked main drains, we know the common culprits and the obscure ones. We're familiar with how the clay soil here in Chattanooga can shift and put stress on plumbing, leading to underground leaks that are impossible for you to see.
  • Accurate diagnosis: Finding the leak is one thing; accurately diagnosing the cause and recommending the right repair is another. You don't want to patch a symptom when there's a bigger underlying problem, do you?
  • Proper repair: Once found, a professional can often make a more durable, long-lasting repair, whether it's patching a liner, repairing a crack in gunite, or fixing an underground pipe.

A good leak detection service will not only find the leak but also provide a clear plan for repair. Sometimes it's a simple patch, other times it might involve digging up a section of your yard to fix a broken pipe. Either way, you'll know what to expect.

After the Repair: Keeping an Eye on Things

Once the leak is fixed, don't just forget about it. Keep an eye on your water level for the next few weeks. Do another bucket test to confirm everything is sealed up tight. It's rare, but sometimes there can be more than one leak, or a new one might pop up later. Catching it early saves you water, chemicals, and money.

Regular maintenance, like checking your equipment and keeping an eye on your pool's structure, can help prevent future leaks. If you ever have questions or suspect another leak, don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to help keep your pool in top shape.
